Visit Helsinki
Although a city, Helsinki retains a wonderful small-town feel with no high-rise buildings and its main square still dominated by buildings from the 19th Century. Surrounded by the sea, its green parks, canals and rivers give it a feeling of countryside whilst being in the midst of a capital city.
Russian and Swedish influences give the city a cosmopolitan feel and the many outdoor cafes remind one of cities much further south. International restaurants combine well with those offering local fare, and Finnish nightlife remains at the forefront of Scandanavia entertainment with hole-in-the-wall bars, rock clubs, dance clubs and grunge venues. Shopping is confined to the boutiques on the Esplanade, the Stockmann department store or the various markets dotted around city.
And the best way to get around and to see all of Helsinki is either by walking or by bike......Outdoors not in, is what Helsinki is all about!
